Museum

During the 1930s, the more valuable and better preserved icons, church plates, vestments and other belongings of the monastery, which were no longer used in mess, were gathered and put in collection in the current monastery museum. From 2007, it is situated in a building, created especially for this purpose, in the South Yard. Among the artifacts, there are beautifully carved wooden crosses, Holy Communion equipment, Venetian monstrance, richly decorated icons and ornaments.
In 2022, a renovated icon hall was added to the museum's exhibition, where the monastery's icon collection was presented. The icons on display date from the 13th-19th centuries, most of them successfully restored, and provide an opportunity to learn about both the mastery of the old icon painters and the stylistic development of the Orthodox icon.
An interesting example of the influences between artists is the icon from the 17th century depicting the martyrdom of St.St. Kirik and Yulita. The icon most likely originates from island of Crete, that was long under Venetian rule, and is executed in the style of Venetian painting.

Another icon that speaks of the links between Orthodox monasteries in the past is the icon of Our Lady of Kikos, reproducing the famous miraculous icon of the monastery of “Kikos” on island Cyprus. Jesus Christ is represented in the right side of St. Mary, as a joyfully playing child.

The other nice icons are these of Christ Pantocrator, Sts. Petka, st. Archangel Michael the Defender, etc.

Support us

The monastic fraternity constantly makes every endeavor to maintain the Cloister of the Holy Virgin at its best condition; this is the condition the cloister really deserves to be in, in order to welcome the thousands of pilgrims that visit it every year, truly beautifully and impress them.
The maintenance of the fund and the restoration of the many unique frescoes, inherited by the holy forefathers, could be quite costly and the monastery does not always manage to cover all the expenses. For this very reason, we turn for help to every Christian and to everyone who values the Bachkovo monastery, to contribute within their means and thus join our efforts.

Every charitable deed will be welcomed with honest gratitude and intercessory prayer in the name of Jesus Christ and the Holy Mother for wellbeing and success of the contributor and their family.
